Film-making workshops set to expand!

Our exciting holiday film-making workshops have been such a success in the Somerset West area that Voice In Action has decided to offer these highly creative, media-driven workshops to surrounding areas such as Kuils River and Gordon's Bay.

The holiday workshops are always well-attended with over 100 children signing up in last year's June/July holiday film and drama programme. The film workshops are very popular with the teenagers as they work in teams to create a finished film in 3 to 4 afternoons. The end results are always impressive as the teenagers showcase not only their creativity and ideas but also their resourcefulness when designing their sets and costumes for the filming session.

The next workshop starts in 2 days!

Stay tuned for more details about the holiday workshops in July which we will be running in various locations throughout the Helderberg area.

Clowning around in the Youth theatre.

Fast-paced and exciting - our youth theatre classes are always such fun!

Our Somerset West drama classes for teenagers are continually growing with new students joining our fabulous programme each week.

The youth theatre were literally clowning around in class as they had to improvise a play about 2 clowns who were plotting the demise of the 3rd, more popular, clown who was seen as the star of the circus. The end results were hilarious with the students really making good use of their melodrama acting skills to perform their pieces with confidence and fantastic characterisation.

Drama builds confidence and communication skills

Einstein said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge." Thinking of new ideas, approaching familiar material in new ways, problem-solving a set situation and making creative choices are all elements that are used in a drama class. These are skills that are important for children to learn and develop, regardless of age.

Approaching a familiar problem or task in a fresh, new and creative way helps to develop children's ability to think "out-the-box" - a skill which is valuable throughout life, no matter what profession they chose when they are finished with school.

The speech exercises which are incorporated into the drama classes develops children's communication skills and builds strong, confident voices which are carried well and are full of energy and vocal dynamics. Children who struggle to communicate and speak with clarity and conviction are often over-looked at school and this may lead to a child developing poor self-esteem. Our drama classes develop good, strong speech skills in a fun and encouraging environment so that even the shyest of children will feel safe and confident.

It is important that children go to regular drama classes on a weekly basis as this helps them with their growth and development. The dramatic differences that speech and drama classes provide in a child's life will only be noticeable over a minimum of 1 term of drama; however, some children may take longer. Regular classes help a child grow from strength to strength.
